8 Jun 2010With this new health care bill, can you be jailed or fined if you don’t carry health insurance? Please elaborate because I am very confused and I thought this bill was to help the people and not the insurance companies.
This is about reference of insurance questions information.

This bill ONLY “helps” about 12% of the population. It is a burden on the other 88%. And, no you cannot go to jail for not having health insurance.

They will use the IRS to enforce the required insurance, and the IRS has long arms (no refund for you if you have no insurance).

Yes, you can be fined if you don’t have health insurance as of 2014. The fine is $95 or 1% of your income (whichever is greater) in 2014 and goes up to $695 or 2.5% of your income (again, whichever is greater) in 2016.
I don’t understand why people are forced to buy insurance either. I feel sorry for those who can’t afford to have insurance and still be able to pay for groceries, rent, etc.

Yes, there is a provision in the bill that would fine people for not having health insurance. The idea behind this is if the insurance companies have to cover more people, people with pre-existing conditions, etc, this can be balanced out by forcing healthy people to buy insurance who might not otherwise buy it.

Easy reading in my link below, not paying for your health insurance will be like not paying your taxes, you can go to jail for not paying your taxes but it appears to be unlikely, still it is possible.
