Why do poor people support Obamacare when it will only force them to buy health insurance?

In: Health Insurance

Did any of you who respond on Y!A bother to read even a portion of this bill? It MANDATES (meaning you have no choice) everyone has to buy health insurance with penalty of thousands of dollars in fines if you don’t. How exactly does this “help” millions of people? If I couldn’t afford it yesterday, what makes you think I can afford it today?

That’s the funniest part… poor people are EXEMPT from being required to buy health insurance.

Hilarious, isn’t it? They get the subsidy but still don’t have to buy it.

Subsidy + no requirement = more money for rims for their 1981 Impala.

I don’t think the poor has to pay for it. they get it paid for

and if you’re somewhat poor, you have to pay for it but after you get money for it

All this bill is going to do is make the insurance company CEOs richer than they already are.

Think of how much hospitals lose everytime someone just “charges” a medical bill. thousands upon thousands or millions. I know way too many people who don’t have insurance and just have the hospital bill them.

Q: I want health insurance, but I can’t afford it. What do I do?

A: Depending on your income, you might be eligible for Medicaid, the state-federal program for the poor and disabled, which would be expanded sharply beginning in 2014. Low-income adults, including those without children, would be eligible, as long as their incomes didn’t exceed 133 percent of the federal poverty level, or $14,404 for individuals and $29,326 for a family of four, according to current poverty guidelines.

Q: What if I make too much for Medicaid but still can’t afford coverage?

A: You might be eligible for government subsidies to help you pay for private insurance that would be sold in the new state-based insurance marketplaces, called exchanges, slated to begin operation in 2014.

Premium subsidies would be available for individuals and families with incomes between 133 percent and 400 percent of the poverty level, or $14,404 to $43,320 for individuals and $29,326 to $88,200 for a family of four.

The subsidies would be on a sliding scale. For example, a family of four earning 150 percent of the poverty level, or $33,075 a year, would have to pay 4 percent of its income, or $1,323, on premiums. A family with income of 400 percent of the poverty level would have to pay 9.5 percent, or $8,379. ”

Details…details…you can afford it if you now get Medicaid, or get subsidies that pay the premiums.

Perhaps you should have read a little further into the bill…

Oh, the response to that is that the government will “give” you subsidies if you are poor enough, to help with the expense. However, as with anything else, there is a whole class of people who are hard up and not poor enough to rate government subsidies. I, for one, fall into this class. Also, these people don’t realize that it’s not just any old insurance you have to get. Forget getting the $2,500 deductible to save money. It has to be a “government approved” policy. And as I understand it, the fine is $2500 a year or 2% of your income, whichever is higher.

Look at BA, up there, telling you it’s paid for by the government. Exactly how will the government do that, get a paper route? IT’S OUR MONEY, BA.
