Why do Liberals blame the high cost of health care on insurance companies?

In: Health Insurance

10 Apr 2010

The high costs originate with the health care providers.

Insurance companies actually fight with providers to keep costs down as much as possible. Why would the insurance companies want health care costs to be more expensive?

Do Liberals know the difference between health care providers and health insurance companies? If so why do you never hear them complain about what providers are charging in the first place?

Because the insurance companies were the ones that artificially inflated the costs. You should do some actual research instead of making things up that look good from your perspective and assuming that everyone will believe you. That’s what Fox News does.

If Insurance companies were the whiny victims they’re made out to be by the right-wing punditocracy, they’d be returning more than 48% of the money we spend on premiums and they wouldn’t have a seemingly infinite advertising budget. Logic.

They have been told to hate those evil insurance companies. That’s all they know. To ask them to think critically is asking too much.

Because they are clueless. What fool would believe that a company would artificially inflate the price of something that they must eventually pay for?..

That is wrong.
The insurance companies are the end customers of services, therefore (via the economic laws of supply and demand) the insurance companies dictate the prices…

Case in point. I don’t carry health insurance. My doc charges me $126 dollars for a visit. When I had insurance, he charged $400 for the same visit… (and usually could only collect about $150).

If you let the market system work as it should, and take the insurance companies out of the equation, the price of services would go down… PROVEN FACT!

I complain about it and I thought it was part of the bill?… working to make the medical records computerized to streamline the process and make it cheaper…

Because they take money out of the system. However, the medical equipment manufacturers are taking a huge share also. I can understand paying premiums for bleeding edge tech but don’t understand why many devices are not commodities by now.

….” And as Potter explains, he’s watched an insurer’s stock price fall by more than 20 percent in a single day because the first-quarter medical-loss ratio had increased from 77.9 percent to 79.4 percent……”

“Medical-loss ratios for 2005 (Source: Company 10-K, year-end filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission):

76.9% – Aetna
82.3% – Cigna
83.9% – Health Net
83.2% – Humana
78.6% – UnitedHealth Group
80.6% – WellPoint”

With an average family healthplan costing $13,000 a year that means that up to $2500 a year per family doesn’t even go towards the actual cost of providing medical care.

And that’s not even counting the costs incurred by hospitals and clinics in filling out all the paperwork the insurance companies demand.

Then why are we double every other rich country in health care costs — are technology is not much better — we actually have less doctors per capita — the only difference of any significances is the drug companies and their pattens and insurance

I haven’t heard anyone blame insurance companies for the cost of health care charged by providers. I have heard some blame insurance companies for increasing the cost of insurance well beyond the rate of inflation.

The problem is that there really aren’t any effective ways in which to combat the actual costs of health care charged by the provider. We might decrease the cost of prescription drugs by negotiating with Big Pharma and allowing Americans to buy drugs from Canada, for example but that’s about it.

There really isn’t any way to decrease the price charged by a doctor or hospital. Our system doesn’t allow for any sort of market forces (which you would think republicans would be fighting for). You can try to shop around for the best price but your insurance may not let you and you won’t really find much difference in prices between providers, that is, if they even give you a quote.

So that only leaves price controls. Since I know Libs aren’t in favor of price controls on health care maybe that means conservatives are in favor of them.

It’s one big gigantic circle.
Providers have to raise costs to keep up with their overhead. The insurance companies have to try to lower costs to increase their bottom line and operating capital.
Many people do not know that they can bargain with a medical facility.

Because they do drive up costs [5]. If you are interested, click the link…

I am always amazed how many Americans seem not to be aware about the real healthcare issues relying instead on FOX and other sources to spread lies about the healthcare system of the USA and those abroad. I mean, if healthcare in nations with universal coverage is so bad, why do they keep it?
Obama wants to make insurance more available to all and change the system so that it gives the American people value for money [1]. He also wants change so that the insurance companies find it harder to get out of paying for treatment. The system he is proposing looks similar to that which works in Taiwan where private companies are involved in providing healthcare [2].
Obama campaigned on reforming the healthcare system. He said he wanted to make insurance more available and he was elected by the American people to do this [3].
FACT – the US has higher death rates for kids both for kids aged under one and those under five than western European countries with universal health coverage [4].
FACT – American insurance companies push up prices and work to stop paying out claims on those they cover [5].
FACT – the USA spends more on healthcare PER PERSON than any other nation on the planet [6].
That means that a dead American four year old would have had a better chance of life if they were born in any western nation with universal health coverage.
If you do not like the policies that Obama was elected to bring in, he can always be voted out of office in 2012. But if you disagree with the facts, please let me know. I am always willing to learn, but please provide proof. None of those who disagree with me have been able to do that so far.

Why do some people insist on politicizing the health-care issue? Are we to assume that Conservatives are sheep who pay whatever someone says is the correct price, nary a question in mind, while Liberals whine and bitch for no reason whatsoever? Is this the point of our intrepid poster? Or, is our intrepid poster simply suggesting that Conservatives are by nature one and the same, in a rather mindless sense, while Liberals are always wasting everyone’s precious time? My experience is that Conservatives complain just as much as do Liberals … but in different ways. Conservatives prefer incremental adjusts to the same mindset while Liberals are ready and willing to allow for opportunity, change, difference and possiblities. One group is exclusive and the other is inclusive. That said, it’s amazing to think that all Conservatives truly believe that the Medical Industry is anything beyond exactly that … an Industry that includes an extreme number of large groups made up of people who, in large part, earn considerably above the national median income. My direct experience is that we actually earn significantly above the median income … and I’m happy to have unknown peoples agreeing that it’s quite okay. Thanks!

I see 3 questions, and a 4th predicated on a “yes” to #3.

1) The high cost of health care was a PREDICTED outcome of liberal-demanded Democrat-written laws.
They ALWAYS blame others for the EXPECTED outcomes of their demands.

2) They don’t. More expensive health care OBVIOUSLY cuts into their revenue.

3) Evidently not.

People blame the insurance companies because they see their premiums and deductibles rise, and coverage lowered. Yet insurance companies are not totally to blame. Many people can remember visiting the doctor and paying out of pocket. Insurance didn’t cover doctor visits. Then in the 80’s insurance started covering doctors visits. At that time if you paid out of pocket most charged around $50 for an office visit. Once insurance companies started paying the office visit went up. Doctors offices stopped being just the doctor, nurse and receptionist. Today most doctor’s offices staff at minimium 5 people.

also they are in bed with those that run of the cost .. the trial lawyers

Honest answer, because the average spending on care is around 65% of money brought in. Some extremely bad examples are more near 50%. The rest is going to advertising and payroll. Medicare is averaging about 94% of incoming money spent on care.

why do health insurance companies even exist?

they contribute nothing to the delivery of health care to the sick.

therefore their existence is a luxury we can no longer afford.

period.

I have to say that I think the whole system is broken, and being so, drives up the cost of everything. Obviously, insurance companies make money but they would make just as much if the costs from the providers was lowered. But with hospice care, malpractice suits, unpaid hospital bills, prescription drug costs, and more, the RISK for the insurance companies skyrockets, making insurance almost unaffordable for some people. All insurance companies do is measure the risk of the premiums vs. what they will need to pay out and they skim off the top for profit. This is the same is life insurance, car insurance and every other type.
