Is It Worth Claiming For A New Laptop On Home Insurance?

In: Home Insurance

I dropped my laptop and the screen broke. I was wondering if anyone had claimed for a new one on household insurance before, and if so, was it worth it? Did it make a huge difference to your premium the next year?

All insurers operating in the UK are subject to FSA regulation and are all reputable. Basically your household policy may or may not cover this contingency. If you have effected Accidental Damage cover on Contents or have their All Risks extension for personal valuables then it will be covered. Probably the policy will be subject to an excess which will make you responsible for the first so much (£50 maybe) of the damage. If you have been with the same insurer for some time and this is your first claim I would not expect it to impact your renewal premium at all – especially if the value of the laptop is less that one year’s premium.
It should not take weeks of “messing about” the FSA require that claims are not unreasonably delayed. You may replace or repair the laptop while the claim is being processed – you have the right to act as though uninsured.)
Provide insurers will all receipts (including the one when you first purchased the laptop.

If you take in to account your excess (usually £100 but yours may be more or less) and the extra premiums next year I doubt it would be worth it (unless you were foolish enough to spend a grand on a mac).
Things to consider:
Does your home insurance cover accidental damages?
Did you list your laptop on your home insurance? Most companies wont pay out if you didn’t list the item
Did you drop it at home? Most policies don’t allow you to claim for accidents outside the home unless you listed the item on the policy as being one you take out of your home.
All in all I wouldn’t bother…It will take weeks of messing about for them to pay out and you’ll probably have to prove you weren’t in the wrong (i.e you’re not a scammer and you kept to the rules of your policy). Just go and get a new one for a couple of hundred.

Ring the Insurance company and just explain what happened and ask the question you posted on here, they will be honest if they are a reputable company

What you could do is a quote with a claim and without a claim and see the difference – online.
