Some agents will help you with this but I think it is in your best interest to shop around for the best rates and coverage. Check with Consumer Reports.

You do that. The agent is not going to shop around for the best rate for you. You can ask your agent to recommend a insurance co.

You need to get your own insurance. The real estate agent is not going to shop around for best prices, etc. Besides, you are the only one that knows what other coverages you want.
A standard Homeowners policy covers the house, personal property, liability, med pay, etc. The agent is not going to know what limits you want.
Call whoever carries your car insurance. Most insurance companies offer a discount if you have your house and your car both insured with them.

You need to do that now. It’s your responsibility.

We suggest that the client call for home owner’s insurance because it is too easy for a real estate agent to breach ethics by referring a particular insurance agent, home inspector, roofing inspector or any other 3rd party that regularly and normally is involved the real estate transaction. If your agent makes a referral to a particular insurance agent, he/she may be breaching the Realtor’s Code of Ethics.

Your agent should take care of that for you.
