First of all, the dentist will feel more comfortable making a payment plan with you since you have dental insurance. I assume this means that either you or someone in your family is employed. Even if that is not the case, the dentist knows that, no matter what, they are going to get the insurance payment.
I would just call around to dentist’s offices, ask to speak to the office manager and explain your problem. I managed a doctor’s office and I would have worked something out with you. Remember – you have nothing to be embarrassed about and the worst they can say is, “no.” Also, just to work out a co-pay payment plan, I sincerely doubt they would run your credit.
Take care of yourself…DO NOT SUFFER!!!

Your best bet is to try a dental school in the area. You can have dental students do the work with instructors standing right over them. You will still have to pay, but not as much as regular work. They however will not file your insurance for you or make payment plans. In my state the dental portion of medicaid will only pay for extractions if you are over twenty-one. Under twenty-one, they will pay for fillings and cleanings. You have to sign up and qualify for medicaid to receive these benefits. People have financial difficulties for many reasons, sometimes beyond our control, sometimes not. There are some dentists that will take payment plans, some will not. The question is why would a dentist take a risk on someone making payments to them when they have poor credit and don’t qualify for credit plans? At our office we have several credit plans for the patient to choose from to make payments. These are independent of our office, essentially you are making payments on a loan through a company, not the dentist office. From this side you should see the pile of collection notices that my boss has not sent to collections because he wants to give people a break. Added all together it is somewhere over 150,000 dollars in un-paid work. Who eat’s the cost? We do. He has since stopped letting people make payments because too many people abused this privilege. I am not saying that you are one of these people, I just want you to know why some dentists may not let you make payments. Wal-mart does not let you buy your groceries on a payment plan? Dentists work hard just like everybody else in the world. If every business owner let someone make payments because “they were having financial difficulties” then most business’ would fail. I am sorry for your trouble, if you have had something befall you that you have gotten behind on your bills and need a break, then I say you should get one. If you are in the financial difficulties boat because of bad decisions, then you should contact a credit counselor to help you make better financial decisions.

Dental schools are a good idea. They’re cheaper than a private practice dentist and they WILL accept your insurance, also. I’ve gone to the one at Detroit Mercy Hospital.

Social Services DOES NOT COVER DENTAL WORK IF you ARE OVER 18. Best bet is to contact a dental school and see what programs they have.

BY LAW IF YOU CANT AFFORD DENTAL WORK YOU CAN GO REGISTER WITH THE HUMAN RESOURCE OR HUMAN SERVICES DEPARTMENT FOR DENTAL ASSISTANCE. IT IS BASED ON WHAT YOU MAKE AND YOU CANT BE TURNED DOWN. WHAT THEY DO IS PAY YOUR CO-PAYMENT THEN YOU CAN EITHER MAKE PAYMENTS OR THEY WILL WRITE IT OFF DEPENDING ON YOUR ABILITY TO PAY. AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO HAVE GOOD CREDIT. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU FIND OUT.
