Filing For Independant For The First Time & Fafasa Help?

In: Automotive Insurance

28 Dec 2009

I have been claimed as a dependent from my parents, and I would like to file as independent because they aren’t assisting me. This past year I had my first job, and a very well paying job ($12 an hour). My parents haven’t supported me financially or emotionally throughout college. My mom even said she can’t wait for the 3K deductible from me, plus my income’s taxes.
They have no records of supporting me other than paying for my Automotive insurance (about $50 a month). I have been, and still been living with my fiance since nearly before I graduated high school in 2007.
However, I am relying on a very large part of my college expenses from the FAFSA, where my parents income is listed.
My father is disabled, only income is government disability, and my mother makes under 25K.
How can I file for Independent, and still qualify for FAFSA. Do I even need my parents taxes? I haven’t received my W-2 yet, but I will soon.

If you are under the age of 24, you will not be able to file as an independent student. You will need to supply your parents’ income information on the FAFSA. Once you have completed the FAFSA, you should contact the Financial Aid Office of the college that you are attending to discuss your situation. The college may have an appeal process to take into account your financial independence from your parents when reviewing your financial aid package.
