Engine swap and automobile Insurance question?

In: Automotive Insurance

Is it okay for 1999 Honda civic to have a 2007 honda civic i-vtec engine? and Is there any sort of fee that I need to pay to government? I am going to buy the engine from my friend who had an automobile accident. It was not his fault and I guess the other driver’s insurance company will cover his car. I mean they will send him check for his car. They think that more than 85% of his car has been damaged. The engine on his car is fine I believe. Do you think insurance company will let my friend to sell his engine? Even though they are going to send check for his car?

You don’t have to pay the government anything for the engine but your friend would have to buy his car back from the insurance company in order to part it out.

when the ins co totals your car they own it-usually the car is then taken to a central distribution yard and its auctioned off to registered salvage and used car and body shops etc. also the title goes salvage. now to make your day even less of a day the engine management systems wont be able to operate the car you are going to install it in. the computers on your car will be looking for the engine and trans that was in it. you will need plenty of luck and skill to put this whole thing together. good luck

The insurer may let your friend retrieve the engine, however they will deduct the salvage value of the engine from the amount they are going to pay him for his vehicle (and considering an undamaged engine has huge salvage value they will probably deduct quite a bit). Speak to your local DMV/MOT to find out more information about what’s required to report a modified vehicle. Also you will have to inform your insurer of the modification as well.
