2 May 2010One side said it did not exist, but the other side (Rep. Stupak, etc. and many Republicans) insisted the language be changed to state that abortions were not covered. The compromise was the executive order that the president signed today.
So, what does it say in the bill to cause such confusion. I know many lied about what was in the bill (Palin and Death Panels), but what about abortion?
Thanks.

Abortions will not be funded, period.
You can thank the Republicans and their classic fear-based propaganda campaigns for this stupid misconception.

Since Senate version of the bill does not specifically exclude abortions coverage (unlike Stupak amendment) it is up to executive branch to include or exclude abortions.

If you use private insurance, it’s covered.
If you use one of the new, publicly-funded insurance exhanges, it’s covered, except no federal funds can be used to pay for it.

Republicans are LIARS. They are trying to mislead people by providing intentional misinformation. Health Care Bill DOES NOT provide coverage for abortions. President Obama signed an executive order to this effect.

Abortions are not funded.
There is no confusion, as such. Cons have simply been lying, saying that it does. Anything they can do to spread some fear, they do it.

Hyde Amendment prevents the federal government from funding abortion. Furthermore, Obama executive order states the same thing. Anyone who says otherwise cannot read or repeats their talking points.

Randy Neugebauer says it’s a “baby killer” so it must be … isn’t it? No Republican would ever disseminate misinformation.

It was done by executive order by Obama today, not in the bill, part of the deal with anti-abortion dems

It is not in the bill.
It is in an executive order signed by Obama – which means that all Obama has to do is change his mind at a later date . . .

The Hyde Amendment prohibits federal funding of abortions and is reenacted every year to ensure the law is upheld. However, with the misinformation about the current health care bill, the President has signed an executive order that will not allow any federal funding to be used to pay for this procedure. Women will be able to privately pay for coverage as an addition to their insurance policies which is exactly the same as it has been since the 1970’s.

It doesn’t say anything in the HCR bill that could be confused with allowing abortions to be funded. The confusion probably comes from those people who are always afraid that a repeal of the Hyde Amendment wiIl be hidden away is some bill. In 1977, in response to Roe v. Wade, Congress passed the Hyde Amendment which prohibits use of federal Medicaid funding for abortions. This amendment comes up for renewal every September and is too controversial not to pass and be renewed. It is currently in force and so no federal funding for abortion goes to anyone receiving federal financial medical support. Theoretically, since the Hyde Amendment only prohibits federal aid through Medicaid there is no reason why abortions couldn’t be funded through federally-subsidized private health insurance plans but the Christian Taliban won another round and once again what’s good for them has to be good for the rest of us.
