Can My Parents Register My Car And Get Insurance For It Without Me Being Present?

In: Car Insurance

30 Jan 2010

I recently purchased a car and would like to get it on the road. However, I have a 6.5 hour class daily that I can’t really afford to miss. (Even for a few hours.) Would my parents be able to go and get car insurance (I will be on their insurance) and register my car at the DMV without me being there in person? I am living in NY if this makes a difference.
Thank you!

All your parents have to do is tell the insurance company that they’re adding you on their insurance. You don’t need to be present for that. They can do that over the telephone. The insurance company will get your birthday and personal info. Because the insurance is in your parents name, you won’t need to be present at the DMV either! Even though you own the car and have the title in your name, you’ll be a second party because of the insurance, and the DMV will treat you as such! I’m sure it’ll all work out. Don’t worry! Good luck and congratulations!

Sure they can. Just download the registration form from NYS DMV’s website, complete it, and sign it. You do know you can go to the DMV in the morning, they usually are open at 900. Just don’t go there on Mondays and Fridays.

If it is going to be in your name, then you need to sign all of the pertinent documents. You can have them fill out the documents and give them to you to sign, then they can bring them in without you.

Insurance can be done over the phone or online.
Registration, anybody can handle that for you.

Insurance is no problem, but the DMV may require you to be present. I’m not sure about NY DMV rules.
